OUR STOLEN LIVES

First-hand insights into a cult. A touching and compelling memoir.
This book tells the story of a love growing slowly in the midst of abuse and exploitation in a brutal torture cult, which poses as a Bavarian vacation camp. However, despite all the horrors, this story has fairy-tale-aspects: The lost and reclaimed life. Due to the female perspective, this book will appeal particularly to female readers.
For forty years, up to 500 people lived within the confines of a torture chamber: the „Colonia Dignidad“ in Chile. It has long been common knowledge that atrocious things happened behind the walls of the totalitarian cult, which disguised itself with the façade of a perfect little narrow-minded world of the 1950s. However, it was only in 2006 that the founder of the cult, Paul Schäfer, was tried in court. He was sentenced to a prison term of 20 years and condemned to spend the rest of his life behind bars while the former inmate residents of his “Colony of Dignity” began to take their first baby steps into real life. But most of them stayed put, as they had either lost their ability to be free or had never learned it in the first place.
Gudrun Wagner und Wolfgang Müller are counted among those who left the place of horrors, which had almost cost them their lives. Today they reside in Germany. They both survived electro-shock treatments and medical experiments. And a regime that tortured human beings by means of humiliation, forced labor, and psychological terror. A community created solely so that one man, Paul Schäfer, could sexually abuse boys between the ages of 7 and 12 and get away with it.
Wolfgang and Gudrun had long had feelings for one another. When they could finally escape from the cult, they got married. After decades, during which they were not allowed to talk to each other, not even to look at each other. Because in the “Colony”, families were systematically destroyed, as men and women, girls and boys were kept strictly separated.
As Gudrun and Wolfgang tell us their touching story, we begin to understand how brainwashing works when conducted methodically and by ruthless criminals. And we bear witness to the love.
Chinese Summary/
(LNL & CK)
