The band have sold in excess of 100 million albums worldwide, have picked up nine Grammy Awards and scored five consecutive Number One albums on the US Billboard chart. Their story is about so much more than sales figures and critical acclaim however, for their journey from scuzzy Los Angeles garages to the stages of the world’s biggest and most storied stadia has been an epic and often traumatic one.As the group embark on their fourth decade, there is no existing biography which has truly done justice to Metallica’s remarkable career, largely because previous authors have not had significant direct access to James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, guitarist Kirk Hammett and their trusted inner circle. There has been no serious analysis of how the band reinvented an entire genre and then transcended it to become the Led Zeppelin of their day. And there are countless memorable stories about the band yet to make it into print: tales of bed-hopping and drug-taking and car-crashes and fist-fights and back-stabbing that occur when you mix testosterone and adrenaline and alcohol and egomania.
No music writers have been afforded greater access to Metallica over the past two decades than Brannigan and Winwood. The duo have conducted approximately 75 hours of interviews with the band, gaining not only an unparalleled knowledge of the group’s history but also an insiders’ view of how this story has developed. The pair have ridden in the band’s limos, flown on their private jet, joined them in the studio during the recording of seminal albums, been invited to the quartet’s ‘HQ’ outside San Francisco and shared beers and stories with the four piece backstage in venues across the globe. And while Editor of Kerrang! Brannigan persuaded Metallica to donate a specially commissioned world exclusive recording to a magazine covermount CD for the very first time: it’s a measure of Metallica’s status that this track, a cover of Iron Maiden’s Remember Tomorrow, ended up topping national airplay charts in the US despite never being given an official commercial release.
