My father is a minibus driver who can’t even remember his own birthday. His highest education was the eighth grade. My mother couldn’t finish her elementary school education. She is the perfect mirror for humbleness. I have four sisters and they are the strongest pillars in my life. Because we grew up poor, our toys were school textbooks; and we would work for extra money selling food during Ramadan and painting wooden dolls at a shop near our little house; or help our neighbor sell vegetables at the market. Education was the key that changed our lives; pulled us out of poverty. But it was the love of a family that saved us all.

He was one of the top graduates at MIPA Faculty, Bogor Institute of Agriculture 1997 who majored in Statistics. He worked for three years in Jakarta as a data analyst at Nielsen and Danareksa Research Institute. He then continued his career in New York City for 10 years. He loves yoga, literature and theatre. He left NYC in June 2010 as the Director, Internal Client Management at Nielsen Consumer Re- search, New York. 9 Summers 10 Autumns is his debut novel, inspired by his own life as the son of a minibus driver—from Batu City to New York City. His first book, The Melancholy of Batu City, which is a compilation of photographs and poetic narration, is dedicated to Batu City. Iwan currently lives in Batu, East Java.
