She did further training at the University of Minnesota before joining the faculty of the University of Michigan and becoming a full professor. Since 1989, she served as Director of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Service, and in 2003 she was appointed to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the CDC. From 2005-2008, she served on the Board of Directors of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and in 2007-2011 on the NIH Clinical Center’s Board of Scientific Counselors. In 2010, she was named the Robert P. Kelch Research Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan, and she has published essays and a memoir.
