Driven by her childhood guilt at never finding Georgie, she sets about tracking down Timothy and in the process discovers parts of his life that shock and mystify her.
Her search takes her into the nebulous world of séances and into the dark and violent arena of the British Union of Fascists, with the blackshirts under Oswald Mosley who is fighting for political recognition. Timothy works in the British Museum and it is here that Jessica tracks down his girlfriend, a young Egyptian woman who is under the spell of the ancient artefacts she handles. Jessica is accompanied by an impoverished young English aristocrat who, she suspects, knows more about her brother than he is admitting, and together they follow Timothy’s trail to Egypt where they are confronted by danger. There are powerful people who do not want her brother found and who draw her into their net. But in this strange and alien place of dust and desert Jessica falls in love, and as her defences are stripped away she is forced to face the demons that drive her.
Throughout her perilous search, the incessant voice of her first brother, Georgie, makes itself heard and her path is signposted by a series of clues based on Sherlock Holmes, whose stories Jessica had shared obsessively with both her brothers in their childhood.
But nothing is as it seems. After a fatal attempt to escape down the Nile at night, the theft of ancient Egyptian treasures, the revelation of deep family secrets, and the disturbing intrusion of the theory of eugenics, all combine in a dramatic climax in London.

Kate Furnivall’s first book, THE RUSSIAN CONCUBINE, became an international bestseller on both the New York Times and UK Sunday Times Bestseller lists. She writes epic historicals set in exotic locations at a time of turmoil, which she loves to research. She was born in Wales but her grandmother was Russian, which triggered her interest in that country where she set a number of her books. She studied at London Uni and enjoyed working in advertising in London as a producer of tv commercials, before settling to write by the sea in glorious Devon.
