In 1770, George Cartwright became the first European to trade successfully with the Inuit Eskimos of Labrador. Though he had to imitate Inuit ways to survive, he remained unalterably convinced of the superiority of all things European. He strove to "civilize" the Inuit, who saw no reason to change. A junket to England has disastrous consequences for the tribe; the Inuit bring back the pox, which destroys them all. Cartwright was the prototypical exploiter, ceaselessly manipulating people but filled with zest for life. After his death, his shade wanders the English countryside, seeking a resolution to his wasted life. "I should have learned to worship instead of slaughter," he reflects. John Steffler was born in Toronto and currently lives in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, where he teaches at Memorial University’s Sir Wilfred Grenfell College.
An acclaimed poet, his most recent books of poetry are The Grey Islands and The Wreckage of Play. The Afterlife of George Cartwright, published in Canada and the U.S., won the 1992 Smithbooks/Books in Canada First Novel Award, the 1993 Thomas Raddall Award, and was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award for Fiction and for the 1993 Best First Book Commonwealth Prize.
John Steffler is currently at work on his next novel.
