In January 1961, John F. Kennedy becomes the 35th president of the United States. Determined to stop the spreading of Communism in South East Asia, he decides to start an operation called Beef Up designed to provide military and economic support to the Republic of Vietnam. Such are the circumstances when little Marcelino Truong and his family arrive in Saigon in July 1961. His mother is from France and suffers from maniac depression, his father is from Vietnam and works as a journalist. As the newly appointed director of Vietnam Press, Khanh Truong is a regular visitor to the Palace of Independance, and sometimes plays translator when president Ngô Dinh Diêm meets with english-speaking guests. He thus becomes a privileged observer of the many schemes of a government that struggles with conflicting urges: a penchant for nationalism, a rejection of colonial France and a fascination for America.
Marcelino revisits his childhood memories to deliver an impressionist-like yet objective depiction of the South-Vietnamese capital city during the early stages of a war that keeps getting more and more intense. As US planes bring more and more weapons into the country, Vietcong terrorist attacks multiply. In the south, the state of emergency and mobilization are declared. Felon generals hatch coups that result in the assassination of President Diem. Twenty-one days later, it’s President Kennedy’s turn to face death, as he gets shot by Lee Harvey Oswald.

About the Author/作者介绍： 马赛利诺•张，1957年出生于菲律宾，母亲是法国人，父亲是越南人。作者是一名画家，插图作家，同时也担任Elle，Liberation等杂志漫画作家一职。作者毕业于一座知名政治学术机构，同时，作为一名青少年连环漫画作家，马赛利诺著有多部作品集，并于1995年荣获Bologna Junior Book Fair图书奖。其最近一部连环画小说作品改编自詹姆斯•李•伯克小说《蓝色囚犯》，该部作品主要读者群为成人。 Marcelino Truong was born in 1957 in the Philippines, from a French mother and a Vietnamese father. He is a painter, an illustrator and a press cartoonist (Elle, Liberation…). He is also a graduate of the highly prestigious Institut d’Etudes Politiques and a holder of the agregation in English. He is also the author of numerous albums meant for a younger audience, and received in 1995 the Bologna Junior Book Fair Award. His latest graphic novel meant for a grown-up audience is an adaptation of a novel by James Lee Burke called Prisonniers du ciel (Rivages/Casterman/Noir, 2010).
