English Summary/英文概要： Rachel Saunders wakes up in a strange forest, alone, at night. She’s wounded and most of all: she can’t remember a thing. After some time memories come back, but everything that has happened to her in the last three weeks remains a mystery. Rachel’s boyfriend Jonathan Lauder tells her what has happened: last week she departed from her home in England to go to Scotland, to attend the funeral of her best friend Jenny Dougal, who died unexpectedly in an accident at the age of thirty – one year older than Rachel is. She went alone, without Jonathan. After the funeral, Rachel had been missing for days, until the night she woke up in the Scottish forest with short term memory loss – retrograde amnesia – something that may occur after someone experiences severe shock or trauma.
Rachel must have been through something very unexpected indeed during the days she was missing, because although she can’t remember, she is adamant about one thing: Jenny is not dead. Rachel needs to find her, and fast. Rachel is also sure about something else: there is a creature somewhere out there, neither man nor beast. It has extended wings like a bat and a wolf’s head. This atrocity is the key to the mystery. Reluctantly, Jonathan, who doesn’t believe any of it, joins her on her quest to find Jenny.
They find more than they were expecting: a terrible secret Rachel has been hiding. Jenny too happened to be on the trail of her twisted and frightening past, shortly before her supposed death. Rachel realizes that she can only find and save Jenny (and herself) if she’s prepared to go into the heart of her darkest memory…

Dutch suspense author Jack Lance (pseudonym for Ron Puyn) has published several novels and short story collections in his own country. So far, close to 100,000 copies of his books have been sold in the Netherlands and Belgium alone.
As of 2010 his books appear in nine languages: in Dutch (uitgeverij Luitingh), in German (Bastei Lübbe), in Czech (Albatros Media), in Spanish (Grupo Planeta), in Polish (Bauer-Weltbild), in Serbian (Tardis), in Bulgarian (Delakort), in Hebrew (Dekel Publishing) and in the Indonesian language (Kompas). This means that Jack’s work can be read in a major part of Europe, Latin-America, the Middle-East and in Asia.
A film and a theatre production was made of Jack’s story Tikken. Currently the pre-production has started for a feature movie of his novella Nachtogen [Night Eyes], to be made in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
As an author he makes no secret of his fondness for Stephen King and Dean Koontz’s work. Many reviewers call him “the Dutch Stephen King”.
Jack started his career as a journalist. He worked for some of the major magazines in the Netherlands, primarily writing about supernatural and other paranormal phenomena. His best articles are collected in his book Wonderlijk maar waar, published under his real name Ron Puyn.
