English Summary/英文概要： On the windswept plains of north-western China, Mongol bandits swoop down upon an American missionary couple and steal their small child. The Reverend sets out in search of the boy and becomes lost in the rugged, corrupt countryside populated by opium dens, sly nomadic warlords and traveling circuses. Grace, his young ingénue wife, pregnant with their second child, follows as well, led by the foreign couple’s savvy Chinese servants through dangerous territory. With their Christian beliefs sorely tested and their concept of fate expanded, the Reverend and Grace discover an understanding between them that is greater than the vast distance they have come. Their love carries them forward, deeper and deeper into the adopted desert of their dreams.

Virginia Pye’s debut novel, River of Dust, is forthcoming from Unbridled Books in Spring, 2013. She has had short fiction published in numerous literary magazines, including The North American Review, Failbetter, The Baltimore Review, The Potomac Review, Prime Number, Redux, and forthcoming in The Valparaiso Fiction Review and Tampa Review. Her stories have been chosen by various literary contests, including as a five time Finalist for Glimmer Train. She has been a fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Acadia Summer Arts Program and Tin House’s Writer’s Conference.
Virginia holds an MFA from Sarah Lawrence where she studied with Joan Silber and Allan Gurganus. At Wesleyan, Annie Dillard was her first mentor. She has taught writing at New York University, The University of Pennsylvania, at various high schools, community centers and in her home. In Richmond, Virginia, she was the long-time president of James River Writers, a literary non-profit with over 300 members. JRW hosts an annual writer’s conference—in 2011 with Karl Marlantes, John Casey and Robert Goolrick—monthly panels on the craft and business of writing, and programs to encourage young people to read and write. She is also on the board of ART 180, a dynamic non-profit that helps children in challenging circumstances turn their lives around through art.
