English Summary/英文概要： Jo, a 23-year-old freelance journalist, returns to South Africa after ten years in the UK. She’s a foreigner here, as she is back in London. Violence is sweeping through the township she’s working in when Nico, her estranged father, calls and asks for her help to prove his innocence in a decades-old racist murder. As she and her father drive through South Africa’s now-unfamiliar landscape, it becomes clear that he knows more about the murder than he’s telling, and she is forced to ask herself: how far can the bonds of family be stretched before they snap?
CALL IT DOG is about what it’s like to be between countries, feeling at home in neither. It asks the questions: what is it like to feel as though you don’t belong anywhere, and how does that affect a young woman, a township full of immigrants and a country still coming to terms with its bloody history and new democracy? What happens when we begin to believe the stories we tell ourselves, from neatly packaged summaries of a country you’re no longer familiar with, to dangerous attempts to change history through sheer force of will?

About the Author/作者介绍： 玛丽•卢德（Marli Roode）出生在南非，17岁搬到了英国，取得了哲学和文学的文学士及硕士学位，曾在伦敦当过一阵自由记者。之后，她潜心在曼彻斯特大学中心钻研新写作，自此便开始创作本书。2009年，她凭借此书的某一章节获得了曼彻斯特文化节“这里有小说家吗”比赛。另外，她还有《 第二学位》（SECOND DEGREE）、《春潮》（SPRING TIDE）等短篇故事集出版。目前，她居于伦敦。 Marli Roode was born in South Africa and moved to the UK when she was 17. After completing both a BA and an MA in Philosophy and Literature, she worked as a freelance journalist in London. She then studied at Manchester University’s Centre for New Writing, where she began work on her novel, CALL IT DOG. She won the "Is There A Novelist In The House" competition at the Manchester Literature Festival in 2009 with an extract from CALL IT DOG. The competition was was judged by Rebecca Swift from The Literary Consultancy, Canongate’s Dan Franklin and novelist Sherry Ashworth. Her short stories SECOND DEGREE and SPRING TIDE were published in the 2009 and 2010 Bristol Short Story Prize Anthologies; PIECES GREEN was shortlisted for the 2011 Bridport Prize. She lives in London.
