English Summary/英文概要： ‘The issue of economic development in Asia has long interested those interested in the ways formerly poor economies can be transformed into relatively highly industrialised and prosperous ones. The examples of the Asian “tiger economies” are often held up variously to vindicate or rebut the merits of a free market strategy. This book does much to contribute to that debate for it focuses on the issue of the developmental state and how Asian economies have been driven by some quite diverse development policies by different governments. It challenges neoclassical orthodoxy for laissez faire approaches have been rare in Asia yet the economic growth strategies of many states have been startlingly successful.
This book presents a novel and timely contribution to the literature on economic development in Asia. By placing up-to-date analyses of the Chinese and Indian experiences alongside more established views of the tiger economies, we see a much more complex yet insightful examination of the processes of economic growth and development. Both China and India have emerged from centrally controlled and inward-looking economic strategies to much more market-led approaches. Whilst China has retained a strong state-centred and authoritarian political system, it has adopted a much more liberal and trade-oriented economic approach. By contrast, India has struggled to define a clear economic strategy away from import-substitution industrialisation.
