Almost 50 years after the war, however, his life was changed by the discovery that his interrogator, the Japanese interpreter, was still alive - their reconciliation is the culmination of this extraordinary story.

This beautiful, awkward book tells the story of a fine and awkward man. Here, I think, is an account that rises above mere timeliness and comes near to being a classic of autobiography (Ian Jack Guardian )
About the Author/作者介绍： Eric Lomax生於1919年，是蘇格蘭郵政局長的獨子。由於天資聰穎，他被送至愛丁堡皇家學院就讀。1995年，他原諒曾在二戰被俘期間折磨過他的日本軍官永瀨武志。2012年在蘇格蘭家中逝世，享年93歲。Eric Lomax was born in 1919. During the Second World War he was captured and tortured by the Japanese Army and forced to work on the notorious Burma-Siam railway. He met and forgave his torturer in 1995. He now lives in Berwick-upon-Tweed.
