English Summary/英文概要： An interesting portrayal of two Afghan women divided by time – Shekiba who lives at the turn of the 20th century and her great‐niece Rahima ‐ but who both find freedom from the constraints of the societies they live in by living as men (Shekiba as a guard to King Habibullah’s harem, Rahima becoming a bacha posh – a daughter who becomes a son). It is also a clever, subtle portrayal of how Afghan society can be seen to have moved backwards over the last 100 years – Shekiba, ultimately, has more social mobility than her descendant. Nadia is an Afghan‐American, born in the United States to parents of Afghan descent. Her parents left Afghanistan in the 1970s, before the Soviet invasion that led to decades of war. Their Afghanistan was a progressive one, where women held office positions alongside men and had opportunities to achieve higher education. In 2002, she made her first trip to Afghanistan with her parents. She walked into a country she had come to know from dismal news reports over the years. Her parents walked into a country they could barely recognize. In 2009, the author travelled again to Europe and became increasingly aware of the plight of Afghans struggling to escape their bleak prospects and make a life for themselves in Europe. In this, her first novel, she tells their story.
