English Summary/英文概要： In the middle of a night in September 1569 the famous Arsenale of Venice goes up in flames and with it an entire neighbourhood is burned down. The mistery sorrounding this historical fact which is still unresolved today according to official historiography, along with the subsequent build up to the war against the Turks is the setting in which Giuseppe Furno has woven the intricate plot of this amazing novel. VETRO is the result of the author’s 4 year long studies on original historical sources, and we can confidently say that historical research is impecable, but what we find most outstanding is the author’s skill in taking the reader back in time.
VETRO is the story of the official reason behind the Serenissima Republic ’s decision to abandon its libertarian and tolerant tradition based on peace , as means of guaranteing the flourishing trade of its City. At this historical time, trade widens it’s horizons to reach the Americas and to do this Venice is under pressure to secure the protection of the Catholic Church and embrace its belligerent aims. An effect of this is that the Serenissima Republic must open its doors to the Inquisition, whose proceedings can be seen in the records of the trials, in the court intrigues of the times and which culminated in the powerful public book burning scene in Piazza San Marco, where thousands of books and secret codes were reduced to cinders. Such events anticipated the “saint alliance” against the "infidels" which resulted in the famous Battle of Lepanto -
This is the backdrop against which the main character of the novel, young duty solicitor Andrea Lorendan has to prove the innocence of a young lad accused of murdering his younger brother, to unveil the secret message hidden in the last words of the Abbess to him and to discover how these two events are tied to the explosion of the arsenale and not least to his own personal family history.
Andrea is not just young idealist but he is also the yongest son of the Doge and his obstinate search for truth and justice and his ambiguous political position lead him to be caught up in an intricated sequence of crimes that puts his own name and very life at risk. To add even more spice and heartbeat to this story, Andrea has to choose between the love of two women: whether to break his long engagement with Taddea, the beautiful aristocrat belonging to a powerful family and approved by his father or to follow his feelings for Sofia, a poor seamstress thus sliding even more into the arms of danger.
In the end his courage and tenacity force him to evolve from an idealist but sometimes naive young man, to an adult who is able to make bold, crucial but sometimes harsh decisions.
Besides being a rich entertaining novel, a further merit is that it doesn’t hide an ideological end: the characters are not divided into innocents and criminals. It is a big fresco of humanity with all it’s contradictions, including the role of fate who wriggles its way into history often determining its course. It is a world which is remeniscent of the paintings by Carpaccio. Similarly , the characters who are all strong and vivid all rounded figures, meticulously rendered and never superficially characterized evoke the subtle portraits of the time by Lorenzo Lotto.
In this big fresco the cause of explosion of the Arsenale offered by Giuseppe Furno is as plausible as any other fictional creation but the array of human passion, political intrigues, cultural battles that this course of events rest upon really made up the Venice at the end of the 16th Century.
Last but not least this is a novel that pays homage to the city of Venice who ultimately is the real heroine of VETRO as she comes to life in such a tangible way in all of its elements (earth, water, fire, air ), – awakening all our senses: You can touch the stone with which it was built, you can smell the sea, feel and hear the winds and waves, see the very different lights of the day, the spellbinding views that embrace you everytime you turn a corner.
VETRO like Doctor Zivago, War and Peace – is a choral novel where you can find war and survival, love and sorrow and where a passion for history embraces a talent in story telling making this a thoroughly entertaining read that will apeal a broad range of readers.

Vetro is also finalist at the literary circle Rhegium Julii of Reggio Calabria which will be awarded at the end of August. So fingers crossed!

Giuseppe Furno (Rome, 1953) is a successful screenwriter both for cinema and television, for which he wrote many series broadcasted by RAI national television. In 2007 he published Cronache di un disinfestatore, longlisted for 2007 Campiello Award and finalist at the Corrado Alvaro Award for the first novel.
