About the Author/作者介绍： Mike Stocks’ first novel White Man Falling (2006) won the £2500 Goss First Novel prize and garnered excellent reviews across the papers – see prelims in ms doc. Mike is one of the few authors from the last ten years to make the Guardian’s Guide to Essential Fiction: 1000 novels that everyone must read, sandwiched by Laurence Sterne and R.S. Surtees. With White Man Falling enjoying particularly healthy sales for a debut novel from a tiny independent publisher in its first year of existence, this author is a relatively undiscovered but fully-formed gem who would thrive in a dynamic publishing environment.

Mike is an occasional but highly regarded editor. Authors with whom he has worked include Tom McCarthy (who drew my attention to him while raving about his talents), Rosie Alison (novel went on to be Orange shortlisted), Robert M. Pirsig, Andrea McNicholl (novel went on to win the Scottish Arts Council Best First Novel Award) and Kachi A. Ozumba (novel went on to be shortlisted for the Ondaatje prize). He is also a poet whose book of contemporary sonnets, Folly, is widely respected; the founder of poetry magazine Anon; and the translator of the 19th century Italian sonneteer Giuseppe Belli in a volume titled Sonnets.
