from the shores of the Dead Sea, the land that swallowed them opens up and starts to exude
a mysterious violet salt. Its secretion is accompanied by geological changes that alter the face of
the Mediterranean. The sea inundates the land and appropriates the southern parts of Europe,
Asia’s eastern shore and the northern parts of Africa.
The violet salt has a piquant taste and an intoxicating perfume. Its inexplicable origin and the
disastrous phenomena that accompanied its appearance, fire the imagination of the consumers and make it a singularly desirable commodity. Its commercial exploitation is taken over by a powerful
multinational monopoly, known as the Coalition of the Seventy-Five. It sets up a private colony on
the Dead Sea and hires salaried colonists who work at extracting and processing the violet crystals.
The Colony is a desert, surrounded by the gasses which the salt mines give off and the fumes
from the craters, lacking in all the elements of contemporary civilization. The salt kills every living
creature with the exception of man. It does not serve, it is served. The lives of the colonists are
dictated by its many idiosyncrasies and regulated by its plethora of needs. Daily life is made up of
the fear of diseases, the constant threat of attack from the natives hiding just beyond the dunes and
a harsh system of rules and regulations. The Colony ends up being the most isolated state on the
planet, despite its central position in the Mediterranean, because the salt acts prohibitively for all
communication systems as well as where access to the site is concerned.
The Seventy-Five are based in Paris, away from the unhealthy climate of the Dead Sea and manage
the Colony from a distance, through hand-written missives. They, nevertheless, manage to maintain
perfect control through ingenious psychological manipulations which keep the colonists trapped in
the myth of Sodom, subservient to their own guilt and terror of imminent punishment from God.
On the Colony’s twenty fifth birthday, six colonists’ epistles arrive in Paris which give the
Seventy-Five cause for wonder. The unsuspecting Phileas Book who constructs recreational crossword
puzzles for newspapers is taken aback when he finds himself being dragged to the offices of
the Alliance on the ridiculous ground that his services are required for purchase. Specifically, he is
requested to construct a puzzle based on the six epistles, along with its solution.
The job offer resembles more an interrogation. Under the floodlights of the Alliance, Phileas Book
will design the crossword puzzle which has been ordered, but will keep the solution to himself.
For him, the six raving epistles will occasion a descent into the innermost workings of modern-day
Sodom, into the secrets and crimes of the isolated Colony, where fear, sin and guilt take on many
more faces than the Bible ever revealed and, also, than the Seventy-Five are capable of imagining.
