SHOCKING PARIS: SOUTINE, CHAGALL AND THE OUTSIDERS OF MONTPARNASSE
Book ID/图书代码: 08900012B59349
English Summary/英文概要: A narrative history of the lost world of artists in Paris—including Soutine, Chagall, Modigliani, Orloff, and others—in the period that preceded the Nazi occupation. For a couple of decades, a small group of immigrant painters and sculptors dominated the new art scene of Montparnasse in Paris. Most of these foreigners were Jewish, most came from the Russian empire, most could barely speak French, and most intended to live in France forever. The artists knew each other well, often met at the brasseries of Montparnasse on the left bank, but did not think of themselves as a school or center or grouping of art. They never called themselves the School of Paris. But others did, in the 1930s, and that name has remained to define a special grouping of unusual artists who lived and worked in Paris as the same time as Picasso and Hemingway and Gertrude Stein and all the other famous expatriates that made that wonderful time and place seem so romantic and intellectual.
