Back on Earth and without wings, Kade can’t protect Ray. Instead he turns to someone who can: Cam. But Ray has lost chunks of her memory due to the time spent in Hell. When it returns, however, it does so in pieces. After running away from Cam, she is attacked by a group of people who want her to end their war, but escapes to find Kade. Their reunion is short and sweet. The Fallen have taken over San Francisco and started a war, over her.

Ray and Kade head for San Francisco. They find the city has been ravaged, buildings crumbled to ash, the streets deserted. Everyone has been evacuated except for several groups of Fallen, a few human survivors, and a small rumored group of angels. Ray and Kade have to fight their way in, struggle not to get caught, and rescue the people they find along the way, while working their way into the angel stronghold. But Ray is torn between the angels and the Fallen. Vanquishing Fallens means vanquishing Kade. Before she has a chance to decide, the Fallen attack. Ray makes her choice and exterminates the Fallen. During the battle, she blacks out.

When she wakes, she can no longer see the wings of the angels. Cam is human, and Kade, having traded his wings to get them out of Hell, was spared by Rayna’s powers. Cam and Kade go with a group of angels to hunt Azriel down, the last Fallen alive, and the angels make arrangements for Ray and her family to live in safety. Months later Cam and Kade return in the hopes of settling down as humans with Ray and her family. The future seems bright, but Ray cannot seem to shake the feeling that time isn’t on her side.
