THE BAKING LIFE OF AMELIE DAY
Amelie Day loves to bake, and is thrilled when she makes it through to the semi-finals of a national competition, ’Best Teen Baker of the Year’, which will be televised. There’s just one small problem. Amelie has Cystic Fybrosis, which means endless daily rounds of physio and pills, and the threat of being put on the lung transplant waiting list. But Amelie doesn’t want to be defined by her illness, and is determined to prove that she has what it takes to win the competition, even when her over-protective mother forbids her from taking part...Amelie’s unique voice is what really drives the narrative: she’s feisty, honest and determined, battling a debilitating illness with verve, grit and humour. She’s a relentlessly positive character who won’t let the obstacles she faces get her down, and throws herself wholeheartedly into everything that she does, whether it’s trying out a delicious new recipe, feeding up her friends, or arguing with her mum.
Although the overriding tone of the books is light and humorous, Vanessa deals skilfully with the poignant issues that lie beneath Amelie’s sunny exterior. Ultimately this is a unique slant on the coming-of-age novel, with a battle for independence between teen and parent being all the more delicate due to Amelie’s health problems. I thought that Vanessa captured this dynamic perfectly, creating a tempestuous, intense, yet movingly tender relationship between Amelie and her mother.
(XJJ)
