Carmen Bugan’s rural upbringing seemed idyllic, full of close family rituals and love. Yet when her father drove into Bucharest to stage a one-man protest against Ceausescu and the Communist regime in 1983, her childhood was abruptly brought to a close. Carmen’s father was immediately imprisoned: for the protest and for the pamphlets he had been producing by night on an illegal typewriter, burying it in the garden every morning to cover his tracks.

Living under surveillance by the Securitate, surrounded by microphones, shunned by her schoolmates and informed on by her neighbours, Bugan was forced to shoulder burdens beyond her years. Later, under threat of death, the family was expelled from the country. Two years ago, Bugan returned to Romania to open the files assembled by the Securitate on her family. This is their story.

Carmen Bugan is the author of a collection of poetry, CROSSING THE CARPATHIANS. Her work has been published in Harvard Review, the Times Literary Supplement, and Modern Poetry in Translation. She lives near Geneva with her husband and two children.
