DARK AEMILIA
Dark Aemilia. Compelling and richly atmospheric, the novel brings to life the struggles for power, recognition and survival in the brutal world of Jacobean London, vividly conjuring the art and passion of England’s first professional woman poet, Aemilia Bassano – the rumoured ‘Dark Lady’ of Shakespeare’s sonnets.
Bassano (later Lanyer) was the illegitimate daughter of a Venetian Jew who played at the court of Henry VIII, and at seventeen she became the mistress of the Lord Chamberlain, Lord Hunsdon. When she became pregnant six years later, she was married off to her cousin, Alfonso Lanyer, who spent her dowry in a year. Several scholars believe she could be the‘Dark Lady’ to whom Shakespeare dedicated sonnets 127 – 152. The main sources of information about her life are the notebooks of Simon Forman, a necromancer and astrologer, visited by Aemilia at the time the novel is set, to ask for his predictions and for advice about conjuring spirits.
In the novel, Sally O’Reilly gives Aemilia her own voice at last, not only bringing her story brilliantly to life but imagining that her artistic ambitions culminated in the unacknowledged authorship of Macbeth.
Chinese Summary/
Sally O’Reilly’s DARK AEMILIA has been nominated for the Kirkus Reviews Fiction prize and continues to win high praise in the US and the UK press. As well as featuring in the New York Post round up of ’Must-read books’, the novel was described in Bookreporter as ’a sweeping success, a tale full of action and intrigue’, while the Examiner said, ’in rich, vivid detail, Sally O’Reilly breathes life into England’s first female poet, a mysterious woman nearly forgotten by history. Full of passion and devilish schemes, Dark Aemilia is a tale worthy of the Bard.’Dark Aemilia makes one gasp with pleasure and nostalgia for a world one never knew. Profoundly romantic and erotic yet intelligent – glittery in its descriptions yet wholly believable. How glad one is to live now but how one envies the past! – Fay Weldon
O’Reilly is a highly gifted writer and her story rests on extensive historical research, but it’s effortless, dazzling and richly evocative of Elizabethan London. Aemilia is a true heroine, passionate, driven and courageous in facing the dark forces arrayed against her and her son. – Celia Brayfield
Dark Aemilia captivates in its depictions of Elizabethan London, from theatrical life at the Globe to the dead-carts and plague pits of the streets. O’Reilly writes with a sharp wit and lightness of touch but tells a story that is dark, erotic and mysterious. Aemilia is an engaging protagonist, intelligent and proud but not above some moral bargaining.
For those readers of history who glimpse an intriguing woman in the shadows of men and ask, but what was it like for her, this novel is a treat. – Susanna Jones
