LICENSED TO KILL

LICENSED TO KILL is a mystery-thriller, straddling two eras: contemporary urbane London, and the far different world of the post-Dickens Victorian-era East End, where the most famous serial killer in history stalked the streets in 1888. LICENSED TO KILL takes a sometimes poetic, sometimes nightmarish journey back in time between what happened when Jack the Ripper terrorized that city and society, and what is happening there in present time when a copycat killer of almost surreal power emerges again from the crypts of history.

Underwood’s protagonist, San Francisco-based journalist Jake Fleming, is a throwback to Graham Greene: a man trying to do the right thing against growing odds, and risk the terrifying consequences of delving into long-hidden truths about man, nature, and the unknown. His path is not eased when he discovers a possible link between the most famous killer of all time and the most successful mystery author of all time: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Sorting Freemasons from Rosicrucians, fable from fact, and random from ritual, further complicated by the new urgency of knowing when and where the next murder will take place, Fleming must now try to find the missing link between past and present, between the new Jack and the original, and what motivates the newcomer to take such risks to emulate his predecessor.

What Jake Fleming finds in the archives of the British Library may shake the literary world yet again. Was it a coincidence that two days after the stage version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde opened at London’s Lyceum Theater a young woman was murdered a short distance away, beginning the Ripper reign of terror? And was there any relationship between these events and fictional detective superstar Sherlock Holmes’ emergence in the London tabloids at the same moment in time?

What has made Jack the Ripper the most notorious and first known serial killer in history was that he accomplished those gruesome and ritualistic murders despite a massive police presence and gangs of vigilantes searching for him even as he committed those terrible crimes. He was never caught, and that only served to enhance and ultimately canonize his fame. And, as Jake Fleming quickly learns, this new Ripper reincarnation is especially heinous because of his choice of victims: not unattractive middle-aged, alcoholic prostitutes such as the first Jack chose to target, but young, educated Middle Class women whose principle commonality is their dedication to trying to make the world a better place.

In seeking to stop this apparently unstoppable new End-Times Ripper from triggering an intended Apocalypse, Jake must follow the mythical footsteps of Sherlock Holmes himself in order to prevent the new killer from striking yet again: this time targeting Jake’s best friend, lover and partner, Diana Parker.

Chinese Summary/

(LNL)
