1 YEAR, 100 POUNDS: MY JOURNEY TO A BETTER, HAPPIER LIFE
Imagine yourself as a young girl attending elementary school...and wearing women’s plus-size clothing. Well, not so many years ago, that was Whitney Holcombe. When she turned fourteen, she weighed 230 pounds and was depressed, lonely, and absolutely sick of tummy-tucking underwear. Her freshman year of high school was only weeks away from beginning when she finally decided she was done with being the “fat girl.” One year later she weighed a reasonable 130, exactly 100 pounds less. And she did it all on her own—no Jenny Craig, no surgery, no fancy gym; just determination, self-education, and a lot of sweat.
With childhood obesity at an all time high, millions of young girls are suffering silently, stuck in bodies they are ashamed of and living lives of desperation. Whitney’s story inspires and encourages them to start taking the actions necessary to adopt a healthy lifestyle. What sets 1 YEAR, 100 POUNDS apart from all the others in the weight loss genre is that it is the first weight loss book written for teens by a teen. It is the first weight loss book from someone who knows first-hand the effects of obesity and how to effectively battle it. Throughout the narrative, Whitney weaves in her own “fat girl” experiences with no-nonsense diet and exercise advice. She’s also included helpful fitness and nutrition information, and a number of her own workout routines.
1 YEAR, 100 POUNDS is a real life fairytale, a story that is as much about realizing long-held dreams as it is about losing weight. Whitney’s hope is that her story will encourage other teens to create their very own fairytale, one with a healthy and happy ending.

“Well, what did you do? How did you lose so much weight?”
My answer: “I ate healthy and I exercised.”
That’s what I tell them because that’s what I did. I didn’t go on some magical fad diet. I didn’t hire a personal trainer. I didn’t join a fancy gym. I most certainly did not undergo any surgery. And I definitely did not starve myself. For me that stuff sounded too frustrating, too risky, and too unrealistic. I love a fairy tale as much as anyone, but I knew enough at fourteen to understand that there was no magic spell for weight loss.
