English Summary/英文概要： In 1968, in two remote corners of the globe, two cousins are born to the same name, the name their grandfather, a paterfamilias of legendary accomplishments: Peter Henry Hightower, a self-made man, sometime criminal, of immigrant stock and a proud son of Cleveland, Ohio. One Peter is raised on a murky, peripatetic bounce through the Third World and turns out to be a first-class journalist and compassionate cosmopolite based in Granada, Spain. The other Peter, who goes by Petey, ends up a wealthy drug-addled minor criminal, first in Cleveland and then in Kiev, Ukraine.

In 1995, Petey runs afoul of his criminal associates in Kiev and disappears. The criminals track down the wrong cousin, and Peter in Granada finds himself on the run without any sense of why. He runs from one family member to the next, piecing together what his cousin was involved in as well as his family’s long and complicated relationship with organized crime. Along the way we move backward and forward in time, from the original Peter Henry Hightower’s story to that of his children, how Peter and Petey have been living in their grandfather’s shadow all along, and how they might escape.

The novel takes a close look at capitalism and organized crime in the 20th century, and how increasingly, the former is starting to look a lot like the latter. It’s about the legend of the self-made man, the lies a family tells itself to stay together, the bonds of love and longing that only a family can make and that outlast all odds, and what money (lots and lots of money) can do—and cannot do.

A tale dripping with blood and money in a family that’s far more fun to read about than it would be to live with. "So listen," the narrator begins, and you feel like he’s confiding in you about a bunch of crooks he knows. But no, he’s "selling them out to you" as though he’s more snitch than storyteller. "There is blood everywhere," he assures "dear reader" near the beginning, and in due time, it’s a promise amply kept. What else to expect from people who make some of their riches from involuntary organ donors? The bulk of the story takes place in Cleveland, with side trips to Ukraine. Cleveland is "a city built to make money and a city that money built, built and took apart, again and again." There are two cousins named Peter Hightower. One is a journalist, and one, Petey, is a criminal who evolves from Petro Garko to Pete the Uke to Peter Henry Hightower, falsely claiming to have gone to Yale. "How much money does my family have?" asks the other Peter Hightower. The answer is that they stopped counting long ago. Their grandfather was a thug with deep Ukrainian roots. The criminal tradition continues in Cleveland, with the women just as vicious as the men—but will that be enough against a rival named The Wolf? Slattery goes into rich digressions such as the fatal Sugar Ray Robinson-Jim Doyle fight, and he does them so well the reader doesn’t care that they’re only tangential to the storyline. And one could fill a page with all the novel’s quotable lines; "I love you means I will bleed you dry" tops the list. This is a splendid story filled with betrayal and disaster. Readers prone to schadenfreude will find it doubly delicious.

BRIAN FRANCIS SLATTERY has published three books with Tor: Spaceman Blues (2007), Liberation (2008), and Lost Everything (2012). Lost Everything just won the Philip K. Dick Award, Spaceman Blues was nominated for the Connecticut Book Award, and was awarded an A- by Entertainment Weekly. Both his books have received high praise from genre and mainstream venues alike. Slattery is a musician with a Masters Degree in International Affairs from Columbia University. He is an editor and co-founder of the New Haven Review, and co-hosts Paper Trails, a show on WNPR about books.
