THE PECULIAR CASE OF THE ELECTRIC CONSTABLE
A True Tale of Passion, Poison and Pursuit
On New Year’s Day 1845, mother of two, Sarah Hart, died an agonising death from hydrocyanide, the deadliest of poisons. A man was seen leaving her home, trembling, agitated, and dressed in the distinctive garb of a Quaker. He hurried towards the nearby railway station – Slough, near Windsor Castle – and hopped on to a train to London. No one knew who he was. If he had caused her death, he was about to get away with murder.
Slough, however, was special. It was one of only two places in the world with an electric telegraph machine that could send a complicated message at a moment’s notice – although the ‘new-fangled’ technology seemed little more than an amusing toy to most, so the licencee was struggling financially. Its twin machine was at London’s Paddington’s railway station, the terminus of the railway carrying the Quaker away. Could a message be sent along the telegraph wires to apprehend him?
The Peculiar Case of the Electric Constable: a true tale of passion, poison and pursuit tells the story of John Tawell and the events that shocked a nation. The newspapers treated each momentous discovery in the ensuing investigation like an exciting new chapter in a Dickens serialisation. Months of reportage proved the power of the electric telegraph (sometimes nicknamed the Victorian internet). The consequences not only added a new ‘first’ into the history books, they kick-started the world-wide phenomenon known as the Communication Revolution.
Chinese Summary/
(LNL)
