4.2 million people watched the CBS special THE ELF ON THE SHELF: An Elf’s Story, the animated movie made by Martin Scorcese’s daughter, Catharine. Aired as a holiday special on CBS the day after Thanksgiving in the US, it garnered more than 4.2 million viewers. Due to overwhelming demand CBS ran it again to reach an even wider audience.
Projected revenue for THE ELF ON THE SHELF is $25 million for 2012.
The elves are manufactured in China and the creator will send prices for various number discounts for the elves for foreign publishers. According to book and toy markets, the reason for the success of The Elf on the Shelf is that "elves have never really gotten their due."

Carol Aebersold, co-author of The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition® and mother to co-author Chanda Bell, was born in Texas and lived the first 12 years of her life in northern Indiana. Aebersold graduated from the University of Tennessee with a B.A. in Music Education and has called the South home ever since.
A mother of three and a grandmother of three, Aebersold divides her time by traveling in support of The Elf on the Shelf, motivational speaking, and staying in direct contact with Santa Claus.
Chanda Bell co-author of The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition ®, is not only a writer, but a full-time mom and co-CEO of CCA and B publishing and owner alongside her mother, Carol Aebersold, and her twin sister, Christa Pitts. With a B.A. in middle grades education from the University of West Georgia, Chanda taught English, social studies, and reading to grades 5-8. As a teacher, Bell designed a remedial reading curriculum for a local school system and was commissioned to design a county wide reading skills test.
Aebersold and Bell have appeared in countless national print and broadcast pieces, including CBS’s The Talk, National Public Radio, and USA Today.
