It uses an obsessive and dangerous erotic relationship between a 20-year-old Vietnam veteran (with what would today be termed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and a 38-year-old woman dying of an untreatable wasting disease exacerbated by contact with the modern world to explore our place in nature, our innate will to heal, and the unlikely signs and crooked paths that lead us to redemption.

Diane Thomas is in her early 70s and has a MFA from Columbia University in Theatre and Film History and Criticism. She studied in the creative writing program at Georgia State University and has worked as theatre and film critic for The Atlanta Journal Constitution, as a staff writer for Atlanta magazine and as a freelance writer/editor with articles in Redbook, Rolling Stone and elsewhere. In 2009, she relocated from a small southern Appalachian community to Santa Fe, where she chairs Reel New Mexico, a monthly showcase for work by the state’s independent filmmakers. Her first novel, THE YEAR THE MUSIC CHANGED, was published in 2005 by The Toby Press, a small literary house. It received raves from Library Journal, Kirkus and Publishers Weekly. An early version of IN WILDERNESS (under the title THE CLEARING) was nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
