English Summary/英文概要： 1937, in an imaginary village in the province of Alessandria: the woodman Emilio Santi is the victim of an accident. A widower, Emilio leaves two daughters – Ausilia and Clelia aged eighteen and sixteen respectively.
1963, Alessandria: Clelia Santi is found brutally murdered in the clothing factory where she works. Inspector Piazzi leads the enquiry, helped first by a sergeant and then, one by one, by various collaborators. At first a local delinquent known to Clelia is the main suspect but soon a dramatic turn of events alters everything: the body of another woman is found in the River Tanaro. Another murder, that of an American maitresse from Brooklyn, partner in crime of an uncle of the Santi family.
The truth is that all the members of the family have far more secrets (and responsibilities and money) than one might think. And they are all blinded by greed.
