THE ANCHORESS
The Anchoress is the extraordinary story of Sarah, cloth-merchant’s daughter who, having repulsed the advances of the Lord‘s son, has decided that the only way she can keep herself safe from men and to serve God is to become an anchoress, a holy woman permanently enclosed in a small cell at the side of the village church. There were few choices for respectable women in the 13th century other than marriage but after her beloved sister Emma dies in childbirth, Sarah decides on a life of prayer and service to God. A woman’s body was considered a strange and dangerous thing, sinful and weak, inflaming the lust of men and hazardous during childbirth and Sarah hopes to keep herself safe, in refuge. But even the thick unforgiving walls of her cell cannot keep the outside world away and it is soon clear that her body and soul are still in great danger.
So beautiful, so rich, so strange, unexpected and thoughtful ... I loved this book. (Elizabeth Gilbert)
‘A book about fear, the need for human touch, and the boundaries of intimacy.’ Independent
‘Sarah’s story is so beautiful, so rich, so strange, unexpected and thoughtful – also suspenseful. The
narrative examines the question of whether a woman can ever really retreat from the world, or whether
the world will always find a way to come after you...even if you try to nail yourself into a tomb.
I loved this book, and I loved meeting Robyn. I think this is a fantastic book club read, if any of you are
looking for new material.’ Elizabeth Gilbert
‘Cadwallader is a poet of loneliness; few writers have captured so completely the essential madness that
accompanies hermitage.’ Kirkus
‘A perceptive and arresting debut, which illuminates the medieval attitude towards women, and marks
Australian Cadwallader as a writer to watch.’ Observer
‘You might never read a novel so sensuous yet unconcerned with romantic love. The Anchoress achieves
what every historical novel attempts, reimagining the past while opening a new window…to our present
lives.’ Sydney Morning Herald
