English Summary/英文概要： The First Week is a novel about blame and selfblame in a culture where ‘whose fault was it?’ is too often the first question. A woman named Marian Anditon hears that her son Charlie has randomly shot and killed two people in Perth. In shock, and barely able to function, Marian sets off alone from her wheat-belt farm to seek out what has happened. As the week unfolds, Marian stumbles through chance meetings, appointments with professionals, and visits to her son in gaol. Disorientation shocks her into uncharacteristic behaviour. Her misgivings about the violence of farming come to the surface, and her knowledge of the damage that has been done to the land. She also allows herself to face, for the first time, the ubiquitous racism of rural life. Gradually she begins to hear and understand other points of view. By the end of the week Marian sees there will never be a simple answer to the question ‘why?’.

About the Author/作者介绍： Margaret Merrilees’ short fiction has been published in Griffith Review, Meanjin, Island, Wet Ink and various anthologies. An earlier novel manuscript, The Laboratory, was shortlisted for the Wakefield Unpublished Manuscript Award in 2004. Margaret, who lives in Adelaide, has been on the Board of the South Australian Writers’ Centre since 2007.
