WHY CHARACTER MATTERS

In this ground-breaking and controversial book, Richard Reeves shows that an increasing number of acute social problems - including obesity, low rates of saving, youth crime, welfare dependency, teen births, family instability, deep poverty, poor parenting, and low educational attainment - result from failings of character, as much as failings of policy.

In the twentieth century, the idea took root that character was a wholly private matter, but after more than a century on the sidelines, character is moving back into the limelight. Recent studies link specific character strengths - in particular the ability to work hard, stick at difficult tasks, and to delay gratification - to the odds of leading a successful life. Reeves argues that the government should not step back in the hope that civic character generators, especially families and churches, will simply spring back to life. He believes that the government needs to take responsibility and restore character to the public arena.

Drawing on a new wave of research in neuroscience, psychology, economics and social science, Reeves demonstrates the importance of character to society and shows what can be done to address the crisis.

Chinese Summary/

(LNL)
