IS THAT A FACT?: FRAUDS, QUACKS, AND THE REAL SCIENCEOF EVERYDAY LIFE (这本与《QUACKS》是一本)
Book ID/图书代码: 00110913B65029
English Summary/英文概要: An entertaining and digestible volume that demystifies science.
Eat this and live to 100. Don’t, and die. Today, hyperboles dominate the media, which makes parsing science from fiction an arduous task when deciding what to eat, what chemicals to avoid, and what’s best for the environment. In Is That a Fact?, bestselling author Dr. Joe Schwarcz carefully navigates through the storm of misinformation to help us separate fact from folly and shrewdness from foolishness.
Are GMOs really harmful? Or could they help developing countries? Which “miracle weight-loss foods” gained popularity through exuberant data dredging? Is BPA dangerous or just a victim of unforgiving media hype? Is organic better? Dr. Joe questions the reliability and motives of “experts” in this lighthearted but critical look at what’s fact and what’s plain nonsense.

(LNL)
Awards/获奖情况:Author Joe Schwarcz packs a lot of material into a small space. There is no fluff or dilly-dallying here. Schwarcz explains the science behind pseudoscience. Later in the book Schwarcz also delves into the history of science and does a very credible job in this area. Those of us well-acquainted with science will appreciate the author’s humor and derisiveness about pseudoscience. Those less familiar with science but are open minded will learn a lot and should definitely read this book. I fear that the people who most need to read this book won’t or even if they do, will be unwilling to accept the message about real science. I strongly recommend this book to people who are confused about how science and pseudoscience appear in the mass media and who want to learn more. I also recommend this book to people who like science and just want to see it from a different perspective.
