THE GOOD CHILDREN
1940s Lahore. Two brothers and their two younger sisters are brought up to be ‘good children’, who do what they’re told. Beaten and browbeaten by their piously manipulative mother, to study, honour and obey. Serious Sully, damaged and brilliant, Jakie-the-Joker, irreverent and passionate. Spirited, cynical Mae and soft-hearted Lana, outshone and too easily dismissed. Desperate to escape their repressive home, the boys leave to be educated abroad, abandoning their sisters to their mother and marriages. Separated overseas, the brothers experience the complicated freedoms of their new lives as talented young medics in 1960s. Sully falls in love with a suitable Indian girl in the States; Jakie falls in love with an unsuitable white man in London. Their sisters refuse to remain trophy wives, and disgrace the family while they strike out to build their own lives. As they raise their own families, and return to bury the dead, Sully and Jakie, Mae and Lana, realise the tragic consequences of dishonour and disobedience, and learn how hard it is to leave the lessons of home behind. THE GOOD CHILDREN is an intimate, compelling story of family and love, duty and liberty, and the ties that bind across cultures, continents and generations. Painful and sweet, tough and surprising, it is a heart-rending, landmark epic of the South Asian immigrant experience, set within recent conflicted history of the ones who passed off and the ones who stood out, of those who were lost, and those who survived.
(DC)
