Oh, look a Coco Chanel quote to begin a book about fashion and style. I’m already starting this all off with a stockpiled cliché, the sort, which newbie bloggers put in their blog title headers. But wait. I was one of those newbie bloggers. That quote did grace my blog, Style Bubble, written in a vaguely retro font in 1.0 code-it-yourself web design. Chanel, like with so many things, had summed up neatly and succinctly, how I felt about fashion and how I see it embedded into life. Less a strict motto but more like a guiding torch to how I see fashion, it felt wrong not to revisit it when writing the introduction to this book.

It’s all too easy to trot out the same lines about what fashion means to me. Every person has a weirdly similar trajectory. It enabled them to transform, to escape and ultimately they could express themselves through the medium of clothing. Mine is no different really. Strangely, so caught up have I been with opining on the ever-changing fashion zeitgeist, that I’ve never really delved too deep into my upbringing and how fashion, or more specifically personal style became a salvation of sorts.
