THE GIVEN WORLD

THE GIVEN WORLD tells the story of Riley, who leaves her family’s Montana farm in search of her beloved brother who never returned from Vietnam. She travels to San Francisco, then on to Vietnam and back, encountering along the way unique and inventive characters such as Primo, a Vietnam vet with one good eye and a heroin habit; Cole, a love-struck orphan and Elvis lookalike; Phuong, a Saigon waitress and Riley’s best friend there; and Grace, a banjo-playing girl on a train with her grandmother’s ashes in a box. Marian has a great ear for dialogue and her characters are all defining: brave and heartbreaking. But it’s Riley’s own story that resonated most with me - her big heart, her edgy and impassioned observations and her hopefulness for her family that made me fall in love with THE GIVEN WORLD. I hope you enjoy as much as I did and agree with Jonis Agee that "THE GIVEN WORLD deserves a place on the shelf beside the pantheon of extraordinary war novels of our time."

(LNL)

Set in north-central and western Montana, San Francisco and Saigon, THE GIVEN WORLD is the story of Riley, whose world is shattered when her brother, teacher, best friend Mick goes missing. She is a child of the seventies, and wild: high on mescaline at fifteen, pregnant at seventeen, on the road, alone, by eighteen, to god-only-knows-where. She lands in San Francisco, where she is rescuer and rescued, for and by a band of scarred angels. She delivers newspapers, tends bar in a lesbian dive, plays chauffeur for a dope-sick best friend needing a fix. Because it is the place her brother was last seen, she goes to Vietnam to look for traces of him, or his ghost. There she finds a new cohort of wanderers and refugees, who teach her how to snooker at pool, shoot an AK-47, drink snake wine and burn things down. She returns to America, now an alien place, where she has to figure out how to navigate a way home, wherever, or whatever, that may be.
