When Dietland opens, Plum Kettle is working at a teenage magazine and saving up for weight-loss surgery. Fat all her life, this is her last ditch effort to lose weight and start a new (happy=thin) life in New York City. But before long, a strange series of events leads her away from her obsession with weight loss and into a world of feminist politics where a subversive underground group known as "Jennifer" seeks revenge on men who exploit women. Plum embarks on a dark, wild ride that will keep you turning the pages. And she’s such a wonderful/vulnerable character (think Bernadette Fox), it’s impossible not to root for her!

Dietland, a reference to Wonderland, subtly plays with certain themes from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, from shrinking and growing in size to falling down the metaphorical rabbit hole. The novel is driven by the journey of its heroine, but it also blows the lid off our moral panic over obesity. It tells ‘the other side’ of stories like Bridget Jones and Sex and the City. Those narratives are about women who conform to the beauty ideal. Plum isn’t being sought after by men in her peer group, as happens in Bridget Jones and Sex and the City. Instead, she’s being marginalized and abused by those same kinds of men who are pursuing Bridget Jones and Carrie Bradshaw. She is ‘the other side’ of the ‘chick lit’ narrative, at least the hot ones like these. And unlike most chick lit novels, Dietland upends the romance plot, since Plum does not end up with a man (or woman). She ends up as a whole person, not half of a couple.

Insightful, bold, sometimes unsettling, but always full of heart, Dietland is wholly original and totally unforgettable. It’s sure to make people sit up and take notice.
