The narrative pace is superbly sustained and London is brilliantly evoked as a city of half-timbered houses and dark towers. In the narrow backstreets, astrologists predict the future, and alchemists conjure wonders. Traitor’s heads line London Bridge, where witches sell potions, and gamesters turn cards. The river flowing beneath, lands a daily cargo of smuggler gangs and pirates.
The Thief Taker is commercial fiction at its best, by a writer with a proven ability to connect with significant numbers of readers. If this was a novel by an unknown I would be excited by it, with Catherine’s track record and profile this is undoubtedly a novel with serious commercial potential.
