SECRET WARRIORS: KEY SCIENTISTS, CODE BREAKERS AND PROPAGANDISTS OF THE GREAT WAR
Book ID/图书代码: 07980013B66199
English Summary/英文概要: Subtitled SCIENTISTS, CODE BREAKERS AND PROPAGANDISTS OF THE GREAT WAR, this fresh take on the Great War uncovers how wartime research laid the foundations for much scientific progress in the twentieth century. Downing’s research covers such topics as the medical (physically damaged soldiers provided plenty of opportunities for plastic surgery; and psychologically damaged soldiers provided research into what we would now call acute post-traumatic stress disorder); the comparative new science of aeronautics which was forced to make enormous (and often reckless) strides; and the wireless telegraphy developed by Russians, Germans and the British each in attempt to break the others’ codes.
As one prominent scientist said in 1915, It is beyond any doubt that this war is a war of engineers and chemists quite as much as of soldiers.
Behind the armies in the trenches, this scientific war, being fought between engineers, chemists, physicists, doctors, mathematicians and intelligence gatherers, was to make a positive and lasting contribution to how war was conducted on land, at sea and in the air, and how life was conducted at home. SECRET WARRIORS provides an invaluable history of the First World War, and reveals the unknown, and often positive, side of this terrible conflict.
