On the run for a crime she didn’t commit and desperate to avoid whoredom, seventeen-year-old seamstress Sofia Genotti joins a travelling troupe of players – her wit, vivacity, and skill as a needlewoman making her a perfect addition to their Commedia Dell’Arte company. Slowly, a relationship develops between Sofia and Beppe, her on-stage partner Arlecchino, and her new life seems complete. However, after a feted performance, Sofia is accosted by a vicious nobleman. Beppe rescues her, but the following morning the nobleman is found dead, and Sofia is accused of the murder. With no proof, and under duress from rioting members of the audience, the authorities release Sofia but banish the troupe from the profitable city of Bologna.
As the company’s loyalties begin to divide, a heartbroken Sofia flees the troupe and returns to the scene of the crime, determined to prove her innocence. Loyal Beppe sets off in search of her. Who was the dead nobleman, and how did his secret past lead to his murder? Uncovering blackmail, violence, hypocrisy, and sexual jealousies, the true killer will be revealed and the power of theatre will conquer all.

Gabrielle Kimm is the author of three historical novels - ’His Last Duchess’ (Sphere 2010), ’The Courtesan’s Lover’ (Sphere 2011) and ’The Girl With the Painted Face’ (Sphere 2013). She has also written an exclusive digital short story: ’Playing a Dangerous Game’. She has a BA in English Language and Literature from the University of Reading, and an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Chichester, where, five years on, she is now an Associate Lecturer. She still meets regularly with a writing group of fellow graduates.
Gabrielle Kimm is the mother of two teenage daughters. She lives and works in rural West Sussex, the area in which she grew up. As well as writing, she teaches English part-time at secondary school level.
