THE BRIDE STRIPPED BARE BY HER BACHELORS, EVEN (this is also the title of a complex sculpture by Marcel Duchamp) is the story of two charming and germ-phobic obsessive compulsives, Isaac and Greg, newly made friends who meet while trying to organize and recover from advance stages of OCD. Hand-washing is among the least of their problems. Isaac is wealthy, Greg is a devotee of Duchamp, and together they decide to take a road trip from Boston to Philadelphia. They rent and disinfect a large RV and with their "normal" friend Kelly, a beautiful art scholar who smells like a mixture of lemons and fresh sawdust. They set off to score a handmade chocolate grinder, a copy of an ancient grinder based on one of Duchamp’s paintings (see Duchamp’s Chocolate Grinder No. 1) and to visit The Philadelphia Art Museum, which has the world’s largest collection of Duchamp installations.. Along the way Isaac hopes to overcomes his many obsessions and re-enter the real world, with all its germs, imperfections and wonder.

It’s a good read – a page turner with terrific and insightful art writing. And it reminded me of a novel you may recall from a decade or so ago, called The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

Some reviews:

Kirkus Reviews--review - “A cute romantic comedy…Imagine one of those road movies starring a younger Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, and then cross it with Rain Man…. it will inspire many readers to rethink their conceptions of mental disorders. BookRiot—June reading list -“Clever, funny, and fun, and filled with great discussions about art, this is sure to be a hit with fans of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.”

Library Journal—Top Summer Reads -"Bright aesthetic discussion amid mishap; not just for the college-nostalgic but for anyone who enjoys a rush of ideas while being entertained."

Booklist -"Part treatise on art appreciation, part humorous on-the-road tale, neuropsychologist Westbury’s debut novel offers a compelling story about the role art can play to disrupt, delay, and contribute to human engagement with the real world."6.25.2014
