CHASING THE SCREAM: THE FIRST AND LAST DAYS OF THE WAR ON DRUGS

In 2014 it will be one hundred years since the global war on drugs was launched, with the banning of heroin and cocaine in the United States. This book is the story of that war and its consequences, told entirely through the stories of individuals whose lives have been transformed by it. They include a wide, wild range of people – from a teenage transsexual crack dealer in Brooklyn searching for her mother, to a nurse in Ciudad Juarez hunting for her missing daughter; from a doctor in Liverpool who witnesses a startling transformation in his patients when he starts to prescribe heroin, to a scientist in Hawaii who is feeding hallucinogens to a mongoose.

This isn’t a book of policy analysis. It’s a book of true stories which between them chart the wider patterns of the drug war, and how to end it. In the process of collating these, Johann Hari discovered that many of the things we take for granted about this subject – such as the very nature of drug use and addiction – are profoundly wrong, and that the alternatives to drug prohibition are working extraordinarily well wherever they are being tried.

In the course of researching and writing CHASING THE SCREAM, Johann Hari conducted more than 250 on-the-record interviews. The result is a great book by a great writer –a passionate, angry and profoundly moving argument that deploys a logic that is both ruthless and irresistibly passionate.
