English Summary/英文概要： AN ITALIAN WIFE follows Josephine Rimaldi and her family over the course of seventy five years. Josephine emigrates from Italy when she is in her mid-twenties. Like many immigrants at the turn of the twentieth century. Her husband, Vincenzo, moved to America first to get work and save for a house before he sent for her to join him. The marriage was an arranged one, and when Josephine arrives in a small mill town in Rhode Island, she has only known her husband for one week, and has not seen him in seven years. Despite having six children together, the marriage remains a loveless one until his death from the Spanish Influenza in 1918.
The stories explore the themes of isolation, assimilation, and loss. Although Josephine loves America, she never masters English and is viewed as an ignorant “wop” by others, despite her deep emotional life. Her isolation is exacerbated by her marriage. When she falls in love and has an affair that results in a pregnancy, she gives the baby girl up for adoption, telling her family the baby was stillborn. Her yearning for that child and the man who fathered her echo throughout her life.
The book is divided into three parts: Part One: 1900 – 1918; Part Two: 1938 – 1956; Part Three: 1970 – 1974. Part One focuses on Josephine and her young family. In Part Two, Josephine is the grandmother who haunts the background of the stories as her daughters struggle to raise their families, straddling the Old Ways and American traditions and values. Josephine’s grandchildren and great grandchildren’s stories populate Part Three, in which Josephine is old and near death.
