THE LOST LANDS OF PARADISE
THE LOST LANDS OF PARADISE is told in three parts: The first from the perspective of a young boy growing up in a Kurdish village in southeastern Turkey, the second from the perspective of the boy’s grandmother, Almast, who, as the boy and his father come to find out, is actually Armenian, and the third in third person, narrating the voyage of the boy and his father as they transport the body of the Almast from the big city back to the village of her birth to be buried. It is a brave novel which tackles the issues of the ongoing Turkish-Kurdish conflict, as well as the Armenian genocide, and especially the Kurds’ involvement in that genocide. But most of all, it is a very human, if heart-wrenching novel (though not without sparks of humor). With 2015 marking the 100th year since the Armenian genocide, there is certain to be more and more discussion of this tragedy, and the Kurdish issue remains an important one for Turkey as well as the surrounding countries in the Middle East, I think readers will appreciate hearing from an author with genuine insight, who has witnessed the Kurdish tragedy first-hand, and is struggling to deal with the tragedy of the Armenian genocide, and the involvement of his forefathers’ in it.
(LNL)
