HOW TO BE WELL READ: A GUIDE TO 412 GREAT NOVELS, 61 GUILTY PLEAS-URES, AND A HANDFUL OF THE UNFAIRLY NEGLECTED
How to be Well Read is a guide to 412 great novels, 61 guilty pleasures and a handful of the unfairly neglected. It is to be published 8th May this year hardcover with an extent of 576pp and priced at £20.
We are aware that this is quite a long book so to be very clear we would be happy for contracted publishers to take out certain entries if necessary to make it more manageable for translation.
John Sutherland, author of the well-known Is Heathcliff a Murderer?, offers his very personal guide to the best books ever written, along with a compelling defence of why they matter.
As the annual tide of published novels grows ever greater, it’s a hard job to keep up, let alone sort the wheat from the chaff. Fortunately John Sutherland, editor of The Oxford Companion to Popular Fiction and Professor of Modern English Literature at University College London, is on hand to do precisely that for you. In over 500 wittily informative essays he introduces you to the very best of the world’s fiction, both canonical and modern. His taste is impressively catholic: an appreciation of Candide is followed by a consideration of Carry On, Jeeves. War and Peace, Portnoy’s Complaint and Tarzan of the Apes all make an appearance. There are imposing Victorian novels, entertaining contemporary thrillers and everything in between, from spy novels to romance. In each case a sense of the flavour of the novel is brilliantly evoked and a forceful case made for why it should be a candidate for the bookshelf or bedside table. The end result is both a wonderful dip-in book and a virtual history of the novel.
Chinese Summary/
(LYR)
