Handel’s older brothers are known for their shady dealings and heading up one of the worst gangs around. Ask anybody and they’d tell you that it was just a matter of time before Handel joined the criminal ranks of his family—if he hadn’t already.
Despite her friends’ worries, Jane goes out with Handel, then goes out with him again. Soon they are falling hard for each other and the whole town is talking about this unlikely good-girl, bad-boy couple, even taking this gossip to Mrs. Calvetti’s sewing room. Jane, still reeling from the loss of her father and her part in his death—a night still fuzzy in her memory, but coming back to her piece by piece—spurns caution. Doesn’t she deserve some love after all she’s been through? Doesn’t she get to have a dose of summer fun like everybody else? Turns out, Jane isn’t as good a girl as everybody once thought.
Yet as Jane’s memory of that tragic night in February starts to come back, she starts to wonder about the company Handel keeps and if she might still be in danger. And though her friends worry what’s really behind Handel’s interest in Jane, and whether she isn’t letting things go way, way too fast—Jane will have none of it. Handel loves her—that’s all she needs to know.
But will Jane come to regret this love for a boy everyone knows not to trust?

Donna Freitas is the author of both fiction and nonfiction. Over the years she has written for national newspapers and magazines, including The Wall Street Journal,The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and Newsweek. Donna has been a professor at Boston University in the Department of Religion and also at Hofstra University in their Honors College. She writes children’s novels for Scholastic, Harper Collins, and FSG, and she loves it very much! Donna splits her time between Brooklyn, NY and Barcelona, Spain.
