English Summary/英文概要： Set in Florida in 1935, the year of the great hurricane, SUMMERTIME is based on real historical events. The story centres around the bright and courageous Missy, who works for the Kincaid family; and Henry, a black WWI veteran who has finally returned to Florida after an absence of eighteen years. Missy has loved Henry since she was a young girl, but their happy reunion is soon threatened by a vicious local rumour that Henry is the true father of the Deputy Sheriff’s son.
When Missy’s employer, Mrs Kincaid, is brutally attacked and left for dead, the Deputy Sheriff is all too ready to believe that Henry is responsible. Henry is arrested and it is clear that, if he is not punished through official channels, then a group of white local men will take matters into their own hands. Fearing that there can be no justice for him, Henry goes on the run just as a vast storm is brewing.
But when the full force of the hurricane hits Heron Key, everyone – whether black or white – is caught up in the struggle to survive. It is a truly terrifying night, after which nothing will ever be the same.

About the Author/作者介绍： 瓦纳萨•拉法叶从小在弗罗里达长大，后前往巴黎求学并曾在欧洲生活。她曾在英国生活了长达25年，并曾于学术出版界担任组稿编辑，起初在牛津大学出版社，后在布拉克威尔出版社，现今作者于威利出版社工作。奥利文曾写作过一部无名的第二部小说，而瓦纳萨近期正致力于这一话题的研究。虽然目前尚无更详尽细节，然而正如《夏日时光》一样，本书将继续沿用历史背景的设立，且故事发生地点极有可能会是美国。Vanessa Lafaye grew up in Florida, studied in Paris and then stayed in Europe. She has lived in the UK for more than 25 years and has worked as an acquisitions editor in academic publishing, first for Oxford University Press, then Blackwell and now Wiley. Orion have also acquired a second, untitled novel, so Vanessa is currently researching ideas for this. There are no details as yet but, like SUMMERTIME, it will have a historical setting and it will probably be set in the US.
