THE INCARNATIONS
The first letter falls into Driver Wang’s lap as he flips down the visor in his taxi on Worker’s Stadium road in Beijing, a polluted, congested city of rapid development, preparing for the 2008 Olympics. More letters follow, telling the stories of Wang’s previous lives bound to this mysterious ‘soulmate’, spanning a thousand years of Chinese history. One letter tells of his life as a Eunuch during the Tang Dynasty of the C6th, another a Jurchen, enslaved by Genghis Khan’s Mongol hoards as they rampaged across the Gobi Dessert. In other lives, a Ming Dynasty concubine; a fisherman during the Opium War and a teenage Red Guard during the Cultural Revolution.
This is an extraordinary novel of ambition and scope, inspired by Chinese folklore, literary classics and history. Beautifully written, The Incarnations seamlessly moves back and forth between Wang’s struggle to be a dutiful husband and father in modern-day Beijing, and the exhilarating, horrifying tales of his past incarnations.
(DC)
