WHO KNOWS TOMORROW: A MEMOIR OF FINDING FAMILY AMONG THE LOST CHILDREN OF AFRICA(OLD TITLE: SOMEBODY’S CHILD)

Book ID/图书代码: 06840014B68164

English Summary/英文概要: A lead title from Weinstein Books!

As lush, exotic and personal as Eat, Pray, Love, and as inspirational and moving as Little Princes, Somebody’s Child combines the bestseller potential of international adventure with the flair and appeal of the high fashion biography.

In the summer of 1985, at age 18, a poor, bookish young woman named Lisa Lovatt-Smith wins an essay contest that lands her a plum internship at Anna Wintour’s British Vogue. It is a dazzling, extravagant time in fashion, and Lisa quickly shows a talent for the work. Within a year, Wintour makes Lisa Photo Editor, the youngest photo editor in the history of Conde Nast. Lisa’s meteoric rise continues, and at 21 she is tapped to launch and run Spanish Vogue. Lisa’s life is a brilliant kaleidoscope of front row center seats at fashion shows, lavish celebrityfilled parties, and spectacular gifts from the world’s top designers.

Five year old Leila shows up outside Lisa’s door one cold spring morning with a dirty face and a flimsy dress. Unsupervised, she is left to fend for herself by her disinterested, drugaddled family. Lisa’s concern for Leila’s safety grows until she feels compelled to take action. Against the advice of family and colleagues, she fosters and then adopts Leila. As the two grow closer, Lisa realizes the full, shocking extent of the abuse Leila has suffered. As a teenager Leila acts out in a series of disturbing behaviors, and on the advice of a counselor, a distraught Lisa journeys to Ghana with Leila to work in an orphanage, an experience she hopes will teach Leila empathy and mend their increasingly rocky relationship. The trip proves transformational, and not just for Leila. Confronted with the grim reality of the suffering of Africa’s most vulnerable children, Lisa dumps her spectacular fashion career and relocates to Ghana to begin a long, brutal struggle to reform their system of corrupt, unlicensed orphanages.

Somebody’s Child is that rare memoir that lifts you up and leaves you reeling; it is a harrowing but ultimately exultant book from which readers emerge changed. Beyond the loss of creature comforts and fancy friends, Lisa confronts terrible dangers in her resolve to help Africa’s children, including death threats, armed robbery and assault, and arson. Readers will marvel at the extraordinary strength and grit of a woman who makes painful personal sacrifices to forge a better future for others.
