Hitmaker’s Tunes Lead to Jukebox Musical By PATRICK HEALY

A new jukebox musical about the 1960s-era songwriter and record producer Bert Berns, featuring hits including “Twist and Shout,” “I Want Candy” and “Hang On, Sloopy,” will begin a commercial Off Broadway run at Signature Center on June 25 and open on July 21, the producers announced on Thursday.

The musical is titled “Piece of My Heart,” another Berns song that is perhaps best known for the cover by Janis Joplin. With a book by Daniel Goldfarb (“Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me”), the show will be directed and choreographed by Denis Jones (a Broadway performer-turned-choreographer) and feature a cast of 16 and a band of 8.

Berns wrote or co-wrote many hits during the ‘60s; he died in 1967, at age 38, and is far less known today than contemporaries like Carole King and Neil Sedaka. The world premiere is being mounted by Merged Work Productions, a company formed by two of Berns’s children, Brett and Cassandra.
