THE ART OF BAKING BLIND

THE ART OF BAKING BLIND is set during a baking competition run by Eaden’s, an upmarket supermarket, aimed at finding the new ‘Mrs Eaden’, (the Delia Smith of her day). Spliced with extracts from Kathleen Eaden’s classic cookbook The Art of Baking and with sections set in the 1960s in her voice, it follows the lives of the four very different competitors – Vicki, who has given up her teaching job to stay at home and be the perfect mother to three-year-old Alfie; Jenny, who copes with her empty nest by cooking obsessively for her dentist husband (who has just taken up marathon running); twenty-something single mother Claire, on the checkout at Eaden’s, who cannot believe shoppers like Vicki and Jenny who throw whole vanilla pods in their baskets; and polished, predatory Carole, whose perfect life masks a very dark soul. And looming over them all is the original Mrs Eaden, whose book has inspired generations of women to learn ’the simple pleasure of mixing a handful of ingredients – flour, yeast, water, salt and sugar– and witnessing culinary magic take place.’ Did she exist, or was she just a projection of the woman her readers wanted her to be?
